Indonesian Man Divorces Wife Via Text Message After Four Days of Marriage

An Indonesian politician divorced his wife via text message after only four days of marriage, sparking a national outcry.

Aceng Fikri (40) alleges that he divorced 17 year old Fani Oktara because she was not a virgin as she claimed. Fikri is the head of the Garut district in West Java.

Oktara says that her ex-husband’s claim is not only false, but claims that he lied about his marital status and told her that he was widower when he was, in fact, already married with children.

Although polygamy is not illegal, Indonesian civil servants are prohibited from engaging in the practice. Oktara has reported Fikri to the police and is pressing charges against him for falsifying his marital status, fraud, defamation, and unpleasant conduct.

Police are still investigating the matter. Indonesian President Susilo has also ordered an investigation by the Home Affairs Ministry as daily protests in Garut have called for Oktara’s resignation.

Fikri claims that he is innocent and that Oktara’s family has tried to extort money from him after they already settled the matter. According to his lawyer, divorcing a wife through text messaging is permitted under Islamic Sharia law.
