A Swiss court has ordered a Russian oligarch known as the “fertilizer king” to pay more than $4.5 billion to his ex-wife to settle their divorce.
Dmitry Rybolovlev, who made his fortune from potash mining, is currently ranked 147th on Forbes magazine’s list of billionaires with an estimated net worth of $8.8 billion and co-owns the French soccer club AS Monaco.
He and Elena Rybolovleva met as university students in Russia and were married in 1987. Divorce proceedings were initiated in 2008 and Elena was awarded custody of the couple’s 13 year old daughter. Elena initially demanded $6 billion to settle the divorce.
On Monday, the Geneva Tribunal of First Instance said Rybolovlev must pay Elena 4,020,555,987.80 Swiss francs ($4,509,375,184.80). The judgment also awarded a $146 million property in Gstaad to Elena and 2 other pieces of real estate in Geneva.
Elena’s lawyer called the parties’ marital dissolution “the most expensive divorce in history,” but Rybolovlev’s lawyer said the judgment was likely to be reduced in an appeal. “There will definitely be a new appellate review and therefore this judgment is not final given the existence of two levels of appeal in Switzerland,” said Tetiana Bersheda.
